Larrakeyah Primary School has just recently been awarded as one of the top innovative schools in Australia for 2023 by The Educator magazine. The award recognises schools that give students an opportunity to engage with a range of innovative programs. The application that we put in talked about some of those innovative programs, being the BatScram Project, where students worked with industry professionals to solve a real world problem.
Our problem was, how can we safely stop bats from eating the mangoes at local mango farms.
Our STEAM Days, which involve the whole school and the community, and focus on the Four C’s for 21st Century Learning.
Which are, creative learner, collaborative learner, communicator and critical thinker. We apply this to how we turn an idea into a prototype and then into a model.
Another innovative program here at Larrakeyah Primary School is Quest. This program is designed to connect and inspire bringing real life context to the classroom through the process of inquiry and by working with industry professionals.
The aim of Quest is to allow students to prepare for jobs as they become fully engaged in the constantly changing world around them.
What I want to be in when I grow up is an architect and that links to the project, as we thought about an idea, we built a model and then we built it in real life.
The multiple ways that our teachers provide innovative opportunities for their students in the classroom has helped our students tenfold. Our students are able to solve real world problems. They’re constantly looking at ways to make a difference in the world around them. But also, they’re becoming proficient with the Four C’s for 21st century learning skills, which will set them up for future success.
