Students who remained in Darwin enjoyed a rewarding week designed around exploring Asian cultures, traditions and food, as well as the strong historical and community connections between Darwin and Asia.
In week eight, I had the wonderful opportunity to run our non-Singapore camp right here in Darwin. It was a fun and rewarding week where students explored Asian cultures, traditions, food, and the strong connections shared between Asia and Darwin through our history, families, and communities. One of the creative highlights was creating Singapore-inspired tile art.
The students enjoyed exploring different patterns and designs in their own creative spin to create a wonderful piece of artwork to take home. Food was another big part of our week. With the help of one of our wonderful parents, students had a hands-on experience of making Sri Lankan milky rice and Vietnamese rice paper rolls.
It was a great opportunity to learn about different cultures through food and, of course, enjoying tasting their creations. We also explored some of what makes Darwin really special. The students enjoyed feeding fish at Aquascene, learning about Darwin’s Chinese history at the Chung Wah Chinese Museum, and having fun at the wave pool down at the waterfront before enjoying a delicious banh mi at Chow Restaurant.
Our final excursion was to the Territory Wildlife Park, where students got up close with some of Darwin’s native wildlife. This was particularly special, as many of the students are new to Darwin this year. This gave them the chance to explore and connect with their new home. It was wonderful to see the students’ curiosity, enthusiasm, and support for one another throughout the week.
They embraced new experiences, made memories, and developed a greater appreciation for the cultures, people, and community that surround them. A huge thank you to all our families for all their support, as well as leadership and supporting teachers who made this opportunity so worthwhile for these students.
