QUEST is Larrakeyah Primary School’s innovative inquiry-based learning program for students in Years 5 and 6. Through hands-on projects across the areas of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics, students develop the skills and adaptable mindset they will need for an ever-changing future.
We believe that preparing students for the future means giving them opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. So QUEST is an innovative inquiry-based learning program that allows students to explore real-world projects while developing the skills they’ll need for the future. So here we have Bethany and Athelstan.
So they’re our year six students, and they’re just gonna be sharing a little bit about QUEST.
So Bethany, what quest are you doing this year? I’m doing Project Runway. Yep. Yep. That is a quest where we get to explore our ideas and put our ideas from our notebook and journal onto a piece of clothing.
Yeah. Perfect.
And Athelstan? I’m doing Match the Hatch with Mr. King. Is this the second time you’ve done that? Yes, it is. So you enjoy it a bit? Yes, I do. What have you learned from it? I’ve learned that not all fish are meant for eating. Ooh, interesting.
Through hands-on challenges across the STEAM disciplines, students strengthen their critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
We have amazing staff here at Larrakeyah Primary School who deliver programs such as media, tourism, fishing, hospitality, farming. The list really is endless. One of the most valuable aspects of QUEST is the opportunity for students to connect with industry professionals. By working alongside the experts from a range of careers, students gain authentic insights into different industries, hear first-hand about career pathways, and see how the skills that they’re learning at school can translate and be applied into the real world.
We are learning right now, we’re going to have some professionals come in here, come into our quest, to help us make some earrings and turn normal pieces of metal into earrings and key chains. Love it. And what we’re doing, we talked with fisheries and people that worked with Crocwise.
These experiences inspire curiosity, they build confidence, and they help students discover interests they may not have considered before.
Is this giving you any ideas about what you wanna do when you’re older or your career paths? Definitely. Yeah? A lot. How’s it helped? I really love fashion, and right now we can, like, go more into the fashion industry with people coming in and sharing how to make everything. Since fishing is easy for me, I think I would wanna do a job as a fisherman because fishing’s pretty cool. Do you think you know the steps you need to take – Yeah – in order to get there now? Yes, definitely.
As we know, many of the careers our students will pursue don’t even exist yet. That’s why QUEST focuses on developing adaptable learners who can think critically. Rather than simply preparing students for a job, QUEST equips them with the skills, knowledge, and mindset to shape their future and pursue their passions with confidence.
