The Sports Leadership Program provides students with meaningful opportunities to lead in active and visible roles across the school. Our house captains play a key role in building a team spirit and creating a positive sporting culture. They are involved in a wide range of initiatives, including sports day, Trash No More, umpiring, game regulation, and managing equipment alongside the PE teacher.

As a house captain of King, I have the opportunity to attend leadership courses like the Group Leadership Course. This teaches us how to be better leaders. I also get to meet with other house captains to plan sports activities at recess and lunch.

As a house captain for Wickham, I have been organizing house versus house sports competitions at lunchtime. This has been enjoyable, seeing the school cheer for their team, and Wickham win.

Our sports and house captains play an important supporting role in school events, including working alongside early childhood students during sports day. These whole school events provide the students with an opportunity to put into practice their leadership skills of modeling fair play, fine-tuning their communication by instructing and demonstrating small group activities and problem-solving tasks.

They play a critical role to model what does good sportsmanship look like, being inclusive of all abilities, and reinforcing the enjoyment of being active. Their main focus is to ensure that our whole school sports events are not just about competition, but more so about participating and belonging.

What I like most about being a house captain is all of the students looking up at us, and me being a responsible role model throughout the year.

What I like most about being a house captain for Wickham is being a role model for the younger students and watching them grow and develop in sports over the year. Most importantly, I love cheering on my house at the sports carnival, and hopefully watching Wickham win again this year.

The benefit of this program is that students develop strong sportsmanship and leadership skills while building confidence, teamwork, and clear communication. It also benefits the wider school community by creating a positive, inclusive sporting culture where students are encouraged to get involved, have fun, build team camaraderie, and contribute house points to their team.

Being a house captain has helped me by being a better leader and having better sportsmanship skills. It has also helped me build more friendships.

Being a house captain has helped me gain confidence and be more responsible. It has also helped me understand what good sportsmanship looks like and how to teach that to other students.
