A standout example of innovation at Larrakeyah Primary is the development of IntelliLearn, an artificial intelligence tool created by staff to support student writing.
Larrakeyah IntelliLearn is an AI tool developed by staff to support students in improving their writing. Given the challenges of large class sizes and the varied learning needs within each classroom, the tool was designed to assist teachers in differentiating instruction. In 2024, Larrakeyah Primary School created the AI tool to address this gap.
It provides personalised support based on each student’s needs, offering instant feedback on written texts with the option to hear the feedback read back to the student aloud. Using Larrakeyah IntelliLearn, a personal AI tutor, with our year five and six students, we saw growth in their writing ability.
The AI tool is user-friendly and easy to interact with, catering for all needs and IT abilities. Students use the blank writing pane to craft a text and highlight the parts of the text they wish to receive feedback on. Once the section of text is highlighted, they select “Ask Tutor” and type in a question they have about the text they have created.
If students are stuck on a question to ask, the AI tool provides guiding questions, prompting them, and ensuring they stay on task. The tool never gives the answers. It keeps students on task and the feedback provided is positive and encouraging. Overall, our data tells us that Larrakeyah IntelliLearn has had a positive impact on student writing outcomes, enhanced both the quality of student work, and their confidence in their writing abilities. We have reduced the amount of reluctant writers within our school community.
