Every child’s learning journey is different. Intervention is how we ensure that the needs of each student is met. Using data, targeted teaching, and specialised programs, we create learning pathways that help students build confidence, strengthen essential skills, and enter each new year level ready for success.
At Larrakeyah Primary School intervention commences in the classroom. Our teachers carefully craft lessons around the needs of each student in their class. They alter activities to either extend or support the learners within their cohort. Teachers are encouraged to come up with three activities to offer to students when it comes to the independent part of the lesson, this ensures that all students’ academic abilities are addressed within each lesson. Additionally, we offer a range of different intervention programs throughout the year.
I’ve had the privilege of supporting students through two key programs at our school, EALD small group intervention and Tournament of the Minds.
I work with EALD students (English as an Additional Language or Dialect) in targeted small group sessions. Each group attends one session per week focusing on vocabulary, sentence structure, speaking confidence and literacy skills. I also provide in-class support to help students apply these skills in real lessons and activities.
I learned in a small group to do reading, writing, and other class activities. I got help with my ideas and tasks.
The aim is to strengthen English language abilities so students can participate confidently and fully in their learning.
All intervention programs offered use student data as a starting point. We use this data to identify the students who need to take part in the programs offered.
These programs are reviewed for effectiveness to ensure that we continue to build on and improve.
I like working with my teacher and friends. It was fun to share ideas and try new things.
It helped me understand my schoolwork better. I feel more confident doing class activities and showing my ideas.
I also facilitate Tournament of the Minds, a creative academic competition where students work in teams to solve long-term and spontaneous challenges.
This was our students’ first time competing at the International Finals level, and I’m so proud of their dedication, teamwork, and passion throughout the journey.
The standard of competition from other states, New South Wales, Queensland, WA, and Tasmania was truly exceptional. A real showcase of national excellence.
Hi, I was part of the TOM team for 2025. Tournament of the Minds is a program for school students like myself to get creative and think critically to solve real life and not so real problems.
Our team focused on The Arts, a section that made us work on visual art challenges and drama.
It was fantastic to see the students in action and to watch other teams as well, learning from their approaches and seeing the incredible creativity and teamwork on display.
Usually, I wasn’t always used to presenting in front of strangers, so I was very nervous.
I was nervous on the day still when they called us up to present, but I think it built my confidence. Tom’s had made me more confident in my speech. I really liked the competition challenges and the teamwork because it challenges my mind to think out the box and create a totally different artwork to express your thinking.
TOM has shown me how to believe in myself just that bit more than I usually do.
The purpose of offering intervention ensures that students move into the next year of learning at expected level, and that they’re able to engage in the curriculum. Intervention is inclusive. It supports both struggling and high achieving students, ensuring that we’re targeting their areas of need.
